Class of 2025, it’s time to figure out your test strategy for you junior year. The first domestic administration of the digital SAT will be March 2024, and there may be issues! Don’t hang your testing hopes on that day. But should you take it?
If you have a great experience with the digital PSAT in Oct 2023, then go for it.
If your testing style is to start strong but you run out of steam, the shorter digital version may work really well for you. There are only two sections - Reading & Writing, and Math. The initial questions in each section will determine the difficulty of the rest of the section. On the other hand, if it takes you a while to find your testing groove, this is not a good fit for you. If you do not score well on the initial questions, you will never be given the hardest questions, and will not be able to reach the highest scores. The paper SAT (fall 2023) or the ACT will be a better option.
How’s your technology? Each student will bring their own device, so plan ahead for what you will be using. Make sure your device is fully (and reliably) charged since you will not have access to a plug. (The exception here is students who have extended time, but they will probably have to share charging spots with other students.) There will be a calculator on the screen, but better to bring one that you are familiar with.
Students who do not have an appropriate device will be able to check one out for the test, but then may be at a disadvantage using a device that is not familiar. The paper SAT or the ACT may be a better option. Using your phone is not a good option.
There may be technology issues at the test center level as hundreds of students are trying to log in simultaneously, and test proctors are also getting used to the new format and the new issues that arise.
Bottom line - Think about your options, make the choice that works for you, and don’t go in unprepared! There are digital practice materials available, so use them! If the digital version is not working well for you, plan to test on paper in fall 2023 or take the ACT instead.
